According to Anthropic’s official documentation, performance acceleration focuses on output tokens per second with minimal impact on time to first token. This design targets tasks containing long reasoning and extended outputs, such as live debugging or meeting tight deadlines where speed is the highest priority.

Pricing Details and Context Window

Anthropic set fast mode pricing at $30 per million input tokens and $150 per million output tokens for prompts not exceeding 200,000 tokens, while price rises to $60 for input and $225 for output when exceeding this limit. It’s worth noting that standard Opus 4.6 mode pricing is $5 for input and $25 for output per million tokens. An additional 1.5x multiplier applies to pricing when enabling prompt caching or requiring data residency above the base fast mode pricing.

On another note, the million-token context window became generally available for the Opus 4.6 model on the Claude platform starting March 13, 2026, without any additional premium over standard pricing, with media limit expanded to 600 images or PDF pages per request. The model scored 78.3% on the MRCR v2 benchmark for long information retrieval, the highest among leading models at this context length.

Fast Mode Availability and Rate Limits

Fast mode can be accessed via Claude Code service in all subscription plans (Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise), via Claude Console, and is available in preview for GitHub Copilot service. When activating fast mode in Claude Code, the interface shows a confirmation line «Express Mode On» and a lightning icon next to the prompt box.

A completely separate rate limits system applies compared to standard mode, with dedicated maximum input and output limits per minute. When exhausting the fast mode quota, the API returns a 429 error with a retry-after header specifying when capacity becomes available again. Unlike standard mode which differentiates between limits below and above 200,000 tokens, fast mode uses a single limit covering the entire context window range.

Cost Gap and Community Controversy

The fast mode launch sparked widespread criticism in the developer community, as many considered the sixfold price increase for 2.5x acceleration commercially unjustified. The announcement surprised many because it was released suddenly in late night hours without prior promotion, leading some to describe the pricing as “more aggressive than OpenAI.”

Market analyses indicate that Anthropic seeks through this move to segment the market according to urgency criteria, similar to airlines’ business class model offering high prices for those needing speed regardless of cost. Conversely, Anthropic engineers believe response speed improvement enhances productivity as much as improving model quality itself, since the wait difference between 30 seconds and 12 seconds for complex software restructuring means staying “in focus mode” versus losing attention.

Ecosystem Integration

The Lovable platform and GitHub platform already utilize fast mode in their applications, indicating genuine demand for this tier despite high price. In the context of autonomous coding agents where a single task may require dozens of consecutive model calls, cumulative time saved through fast mode could reduce task completion time from minutes to seconds.

Anthropic hasn’t yet announced whether it will release fast mode from research preview or keep it as an advanced option for users needing maximum possible time productivity. The trade-off between buying time and high operating costs remains the open question that only the market itself will decide.
